Dysport
Botulinum toxin, or botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT), is a neurotoxic protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum and related species. It prevents the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine from axon endings at the neuromuscular junction, thus causing paralysis. The toxin causes the disease botulism. The toxin is also used commercially for medical indications and aesthetic goals.
There are a few different commercial forms of BoNT available for cosmetic and medical purposes. One of them is Dysport. Dysport is abobotulinum toxin A from the botulinum bacteria.
The indications, side effects, contraindications are the same as Botox. There is always the risk of distant spread of the effect of the toxin as well as warnings. There is one more contraindication for Dysport and that is Cow’s milk protein ( casein) allergy as a contraindication for Dysport. Dysport spreads more around the injection area and lasts around 5 months in most patients. Based on my experience, injection of Dysport in the glabellar lines has higher risk of drooping of the eyebrows and eyelids although it is FDA approved for this purpose, I avoid using Dysport in the frown area and use all other toxins ( Botox, Xeomin,Daxxify) in the glabellar lines.
