Deep, pulse-profile heating of the nail bed stimulates the killing of parasitic fungus. The natural growth and immune processes of the body are then able to restore the nail to its pristine state. Compared to traditional methods the effects of laser light spread evenly throughout the tissue and are not subject to either the limits of chemical diffusion, as are topicals, or the induction of hepato- toxic side effects, as is the case with oral medications.

Studies show that long-pulsed 1064-nm Nd:YAG laser is effective for treating onychomycosis, and the laser irradiation can inhibit the colony growth of T. rubrum and T. mentagrophytes and change their cellular ultrastructures. The mechanism of laser treatment of onychomycosis may be related to direct damage of fungus pathogen.

There are 4 different types of fungal infection involving nails. Aspergilus niger, Candida sp, Tinea unguium and T. mentagrophytes are fungal infections of the nail that causes discoloration, thickening, and separation from the nail bed. It is more common on the toenails, but fingernails may also be affected. Males are affected more often than females and it occurs in about 10 percent of the adult population. The incidence is higher with older people.
A diagnosis is generally suspected based on the appearance and confirmed by laboratory testing. Nail fungus can be painful and cause permanent damage to nails. Many different treatments are available; systemic anti-fungal offer the best efficacy but can cause liver problems. Recurrence after effective treatment is common (10–50%).
How long does it take?
The treatment is usually performed four times at one week intervals. All of the nails should be treated, during every treatment, just in case. Laser light can also effectively treat fungus which has infected skin tissue.

Preparation & Care for ClearSteps Treatment
Before Treatment
Please remove all nail polish and ensure your toes and toenails are clean.
After Treatment
- Avoid areas like spas, swimming pools, etc. where new infection can be contracted
- All textile footwear (socks, slippers) are to be washed at more than 140 degree Fahrenheit and all shoes must be placed 48 hours in the freezer.
- Nails should be dry and clean at all times.
Healing and Results
Some patients respond after two sessions and some need up to six sessions to eradicate it.
We recommend most patients need between 3-6 sessions, once every 1-4 weeks but it might take over one year to see new and healthy nail growth.
